NaNoWriMo Update (And Some Random Stuff)

Exactly one year ago I won NaNoWriMo 2010, with a total of 50183 words.

I had hoped to beat (or at least make) that this year, but I'm currently sitting at 40110 words, despite writing 7,096 words today:

40110 / 50000 words. 80% done!

. . . and there's no way I'm writing 10k before midnight. I'm happy with my current word count, anyway--it might not be 50k, but there are still 13 days to go in November. Plenty of time.

You know, I never really noticed my character's body language/behavior as being repetitive in first drafts before, but suddenly they seem to be doing a lot of staring and glaring and eyeing things. In addition to the raising of eyebrows and shooting of murderous looks. It has not degraded to the batting of eyelashes yet, but you never know . . .

Ah well. What is editing for?

As you may have noticed, I haven't been around the blogosphere much lately; I haven't even replied to comments yet from Tuesday. I will be catching up this evening (hopefully), as I have time to blog (hooray!).

I have to ask: Did anyone else catch My Life As A Turkey on Nature?

Watch My Life as a Turkey - Preview on PBS. See more from NATURE.

And I must link to this program, too, if I'm going to bring up Nature, since it's about eagles. I love eagles. :)

Oh, and I can hardly bring up Nature without mentioning NOVA. I need to get my hands on a copy of The Fabric of the Universe. Because that's one awesome TV series based on it.

If you're doing NaNoWriMo, how's it going? If not, what are you working on now?

Have you come across anything interesting lately?

I'm noticing a lot repetitive gestures in my NaNo draft. But I'm behind on my word count. I hope to catch up soon. Good luck! <3

Dan said...

7,096 is an admirable amount for one day. You've got plenty of time to hit 50k before the month is over.

I've noticed my characters nod and stroke their chins a lot.

L'Aussie said...

Hi Golden. You're doing well. Way past me. I'm about to pass 27,000 which is good as I've only had serious writing time for the last 3 days and my story is finally taking some shape but I can't leave the editing alone so I'm hearing you with the gasping etc. I'm sick of working out who said what so I'm just going to look at the dialogue later. Just want to get the words said ATM.

You'll make the 50K and I mean to too!

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

You're doing great.
And that's the sign of a good writer - you're starting to notice that repetitive stuff.

Heather said...

That's a fantastic word count! You'll make it, I have no doubt! Even if your characters end up being a bit twitchy. ;) Like you said, that's what editing is for.

Rusty Webb said...

I've been nano'ing. Not exactly tearing it up, but I'm taking off next week and am going to try to hit 50k next Sunday. As of today I'm right at 20k. It seems so far away.

I find my characters really like cocking their eyebrows, nodding their heads, and sit in silence, or walk in silence, and more than anything else, they like to stop what they're doing and discuss physics as understood by a medieval society.

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Almost 7,100 words today???? Yay, you! That is fabulous.
You made me laugh with the eyes. I noticed my characters get icy shivers a lot--I'm lucky they haven't frozen solid yet.
I'm not doing NaNo this year, just trying to finish my fairy tale, and I only wrote 1k today.

Flying high in the sky.... said...

i love eagles too!!! hence the name "flying high... :)"..best of luck with your word count and all (little uneducated on that front) .... enjoyed the post!

Bethany Elizabeth said...

I was doing NaNo, but then my life spiraled wildly out of control. Not in a bad way, but it was still hardly conducive to writing. :) That's awesome that you're doing so well though, you'll definitely make it!

Belle said...

Congrats on winning last year, and it looks like you are doing great this year too. I'm not working on anything but my blog.

MISH said...

Wow, 40110 words and 12 days left to go... That's great going!

Old Kitty said...

Awww the Turkey guy was on Nature BBC months ago - loved it - loved how they recreated all the events too - wonderful photography and such an amazing animal and man!! People of America - embrace and protect your wild turkeys cos they're amazing! :-) I hope you also get Frozen Planet soon too - it's the new Davied Attenborough narrated nature doc and it's beyond astounding!

Lovely Golden Eagle!!! WELL DONE YOU with your Nano progress! Yayy!!!! Pah to edits - write like the wind!! LOL! Take care

Batting eyes, lurid eyes leeching eyes, bloodshot lens...
It's been pointed out to me I describe hair a lot. soooo.... just eye the manuscript. :)

TBM said...

I'm amazed by how much you've written already. Over 7,000 in a day is amazing. Good luck over the remaining days. And then the editing process!

Simon Kewin said...

Well, I think that's a deeply impressive word count - so well done for that. I'm in awe.

Sharon K. Mayhew said...

WTG! You're going to be a Nano winner again!

Christine Rains said...

You're doing fantastically! Keep writing! I'm at the same place as you with 41000 words. I hope to reach 50000 before Thanksgiving. That way, when I'm visiting my in-laws and have no access to a computer, I won't be obsessing over wanting to write! Have a wonderful weekend.

L.G.Smith said...

Wow, 7K in one sitting? That's two weeks worth of writing for me. You should be able to cruise past 50K no problem at half that rate. Besides, you can type and eat turkey at the same time, right?

Robyn Campbell said...

You rock, Eagle! Aren't you glad you're noticing the repetition. I had a problem in my last story with the girls crying too much. (They're lost on a mountain.) They were constantly sobbing. Yikes!

Charles Gramlich said...

Writing or blogging. Doesn't seem to be enough time for both

Shelly said...

You're awsome anyway for just doing the NaNo thing anyway no matter how many words you get to.

Joshua said...

40K?! You're killing it. I just broke 26K this morning, and hoping for a few thousand more today. Crossing fingers!

Sprinkles said...

Great Job eagle! I know some other girls and they're way behind.

I'm not doing nanowrimo, (I've never done it before, but maybe next year.) but I've started this little thing called Mint and Zoey. Here's the link if you want to check it out:

Cherie Reich said...

You're doing great with NaNo. Man, I need to get some words written today.

I finished NaNo book one, but novel two has had a slow start so far.

M Pax said...

We all go through the 'eye' phase. :) What cured me was a crit partner who so overused 'look' that I pretty much erase anything to do with eyes unless really necessary.

You're doing great on NaNo. Woot!

I saw a show on black eagles once, maybe about a year ago which was really good.

Krispy said...

Wow, you're far! Congrats! I'm so, so behind! Haha.

I also totally know what you mean about repetitive body language. My characters do a lot of looking, glancing, and glaring too. :P

The Golden Eagle said...

Brenda: Thanks!

Good luck with your word count--I'm sure you'll rock this challenge. :)

Dan: Yeah . . . I just like having wiggle room--a lot of it, sometimes. :P

Hmmm. Maybe I should give my characters beards to stroke--now that would take up some of those needed 50k!

L'Aussie: Glad to hear your story is coming together. :) That's often a fun stage for me.

Good luck!

Alex: I hope so--and that I'm not writing worse than I usually do!

Heather: Thank you!

LOL. That's how they'll probably end up. :P

Rusty: Go, go, go!

As in, Copernicus and Newton and such? They sound like interesting conversations. :)

Tricia: Thank you!

I count myself lucky my characters' eyeballs haven't fallen out, on that note. :P

1k is still a lot of wordage; and sometimes slow and steady is the best option. :)

Sushmita: Awesome!

Thank you! It's for the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) where the goal is to write 50,000 words in one month.

Glad you enjoyed the post.

Bethany: Well, life happens sometimes. :)

Belle: Thank you. :)

I think I might try doing that for part of December, if I finish my current NaNoWriMo novel before the end of the month; I think a break from writing might be good . . .

MISH: Thanks! :)

Old Kitty: Cool!

I LOVE David Attenborough. I just finished one of his books, actually (The Private Life of Plants).

It sounds like a wonderful show! I hope we do get it.

Thank you! I try not to pay too much attention to all the in-need-of-editing material--but it's hard. :P

Stuart: Now that's some creepy imagery . . . LOL.

Good advice. :)

TBM: Thank you!

Ah, yes. Editing. That's going to be a nightmare. :P

Simon: Thanks! :)

Sharon: I hope so!

Christine: Thanks!

Good luck reaching 50k by then--I'm sure you can do it! :)

Thank you--hope you enjoy yours as well!

L.G.: Yup. :P

I might get a little grease on the keyboard, but yeah, I suppose so. LOL.

Robyn: Aw, thank you. :)

I'd probably break down and cry if I got lost on a mountain for too long . . .

Charles: Not really--especially when there are other things going on at the same time. Sigh.

Shelly: Thank you!

Joshua: Good luck! And hey, that's a good word count; there are still 12 days to go, at any rate. :)

Sprinkles: Thanks!

I'll have to check out the link. :)

Cherie: You are such a fast writer!

Good luck with novel two!

M: LOL. I've found that, too; if I read something with an excessive element, then I'll turn around and notice every one in my own WIP.

Krispy: Thank you!

Good luck with your word count!

Hey, maybe they should all get together sometime. :P

Amberr Meadows said...

Impressive! I'm nowhere close to even making goal, but I'm still happy with my progress :-)

Scarlett Clay said...

WOw, that is still an incredible accomplishment! No doubt, you'll be well on your way to your goal in no time! I wish I was as productive in one day!

I haven't seen the Turkey show, but I did see some other bloggers mention it,too, so it sounds like a must-see!

Have a great weekend,

You are doing much better at NaNo than I am! I have 33K Here's hoping we both win!

laughingwolf said...

no worries, ge... you can do it!

Carol Kilgore said...

You're doing great with your NaNo count. I'm a cheerleader!

Keep writing!

Medeia Sharif said...

I'm revising a draft and noticing repetitive things. I think we become fond of certain patterns. At least you're not overlooking them.

You're doing great, by the way. :)

Paul Tobin said...

It sounds like you are writing full tilt! Body language is interesting in books, there is one science fiction author, who shall remain nameless, where I have noticed that all his heroines can raise one eyebrow in a quizzical gesture and do in every book he has written. Have you seen Flyaway Home? It is similar to your turkey man, I love that film. Good Luck with the writing!

Misha said...

I'm in NaNo, but I realized that I don't draft fast. Never did. Never will. ;-)

Sangu Mandanna said...

Repetition is my curse! I recently spent two hours on the phone with my editor, copyediting repetitions! Gah.

I think that word count is fantastic! 40k more than I've written this month :-)

Carolina Valdez Miller said...

I'd say you're doing really well so far with your NANO. I'm not participating this year. I'm steeped in revision, but best of luck to you!

Michael Offutt, Expert Critic said...

You are so competitive. But seriously...good job on nano.

Shelley said...

Congrats on your word count so far, keep up the good work! And that Life As A Turkey video looks interesting! I wonder what I'd be like if I was a turkey... haha. Nice post! :)

Peggy Eddleman said...

Over 7000 words in one day?! You should get a medal for that. And 40,000 words with 13 days left is incredible!

I was hoping to do NaNoWriMo this year, but I could never find the time. I'm going to have to get myself together for next year! Your story sounds like it's going pretty good! I hope to hear a snippet when it's done.;)

Talli Roland said...

Wow, I'm super impressed with your word count - you're doing well! Keep it up!

....Petty Witter said...

Good luck with the NaNoWriMo, I'm sure you'll make it.

C D Meetens said...

I think you're doing great with NaNo. Definitely on target to have those extra 10,000 words done before the end of the November.

I'm still struggling through rewrites, but I managed to breakthrough (or clamber over maybe) a major hurdle, so I'm pleased with where I'm at right now.

The Golden Eagle said...

Amberr: That's even better. :)

Scarlett: Thank you!

It's a great show. :)

Hope you enjoyed yours!

J. A.: Go, go, go!

Laughingwolf: Thanks . . . just hit 50k today, actually.

Carol: Thanks. :)

I will!

Medeia: At least--though they bug me like crazy. :P I can't seem to break out of the pattern.

Thank you!

Paul: I don't believe I've ever come across that author; at least I can't think of any SF I've read with a lot of raised eyebrows.

I'll have to check it out!

Misha: Well, we all have our different speeds. :)

Sangu: That sounds like a lot of editing . . . but the writing must be stronger afterwards! :)

Thank you!

It's 40k more than I wrote for much of this year. I had a slump from February-July, and it only picked up a bit recently.

Carolina: Thanks! :)

Good luck with your revisions!

Michael: Yeah, I can be about some things. :P

Thank you!

Shelley: Thank you! :)

LOL. I have to wonder, too.

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

Peggy: Medal? Nah . . . just looking back on what I've written is enough. :)

Angela: Thank you!

Emily: I hope you have fun in 2012--NaNoWriMo can be quite enjoyable. :)

It is!

Well . . . maybe. ;)

Talli: Thanks!

Tracy: Thank you!

I did reach 50k today. :)

C D: Hopefully; it would be nice to have an edge going into December (I want to finish this story before the end of the year).

Good luck with your rewrites! Oh, I love that feeling you get after reaching a milestone. :)

Melissa Bradley said...

I hope your NaNo count gets exceeded and then some. I did not do NaNo this year because of schedule issues and deadlines. :( Maybe next year.

Susan Fields said...

My characters all seem to have nervous twitches, since they seem to shrug almost constantly. They raise their eyebrows, nod, and shake their heads a lot too. Good luck meeting your Nano goal!

Madeleine said...

Congrats on your impressive word count. I wish I could get going again. I feel like a little rat running around a maze at the moment. Soon I will succeed! Good for you though. I'm impressed.

Shallee said...

My characters do a lot of repetitive actions, too. It's so annoying when I find it in edits!

Good luck finishing NaNo! You can do it! :)

Len Lambert said...

Hello Golden Eagle! Yay!!!! You're 80% done on your MS! Don't beat yourself up, you're doing well. I'm so amazed how you guys do it and it's just so awesome that you are almost done!

Take care! And happy thanksgiving! I'm celebrating Friendship this Thanksgiving on my blog and I have goodies and books for giveaway with the help and generosity of some good friends! :) See you there, Eagle!

Mark Noce said...

Wow, that's a lot of words written! Pat yourself on the back:)

The Golden Eagle said...

Melissa: Thanks! I reached 50k yesterday; and I'm just a little over the goal. :)

I hope you get to do NaNoWriMo next year!

Susan: LOL.

Madeleine: Thank you. :)

Good luck with your writing!

Shallee: I'm not looking forward to edits . . .

Thanks! And I did. :D

Len: Thanks! Though that's just the goal; I have a feeling my MS will be longer than the NaNoWriMo 50k, probably more like 80-100k.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too! :)

Mark: Thanks!
