Teaser Tuesday (92)

Teaser Tuesday--a weekly, bookish meme--is hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.

Rules:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week, my teaser is from Such Wicked Intent by Kenneth Oppel, sequel to This Dark Endeavor, a series based on Frankenstein. Oppel's one of my favorite YA/MG writers, and his steampunk Airborn/Matt Cruse trilogy is one of the best in the genre and YA age group. In my opinion, of course.

(I like the style of the original This Dark Endeavor cover better than the new photograph-based one which matches Such Wicked Intent, to be honest. Not that the new style is bad since it works for the story, but it's slightly generic. It feels like they went: Victorian dress! Centered font! Boom, cover.)

"Will you come then, Henry?" I asked.
"Well, I'd leap it normally, if it weren't for a certain rare phobia of mine."
   "Which is?"
   "Feat of death," he replied.

What are you reading now? Got a teaser to share from it?

Who's one of your favorite Young Adult authors, if you read YA?

S.E.Hinton and Philip Pullman are two of my fave YA authors. I'm reading a rather dry book for work right now, so no teaser. ;-)

This looks like an interesting book. I have book 1, but haven't read it yet.

I read a lot of YA actually, love Lois Lowry's stuff. The book you're reading sounds great, I like that genre as well. Right now I'm reading (slowly) 'A Tale of Two Cities'--

"A wonderful fact to reflect upon is that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other...when I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses its own secret...every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there, is, in some of it's imaginings, a secret to the heart nearest it!"

gotta love Dickens! :)

Have an except from one of my Psychology textbooks:

Artificial neural networks are not necessarily embodiments of empiricist philosophy. Indeed, the earliest artificial neural networks
did not learn from experience; they were nativist in the sense that they had to have their connection weights ‘hand wired’ by a designer (McCulloch & Pitts, 1943).

Fun stuff.

Ooh, that looks kinda scary, but the teaser was amusing!

I'm reading a book called, of all things, The Writers. Here's a couple of lines: "He seems younger. A baby." "Don't you start mothering him," Paul warned.

I'm beta reading something right now, can't share anything. The new cover looks a bit flat to me, but I'm sure it conveys whatever it is the publisher wanted. I think just a tad more contrast and it would be great though.

Totally cool cover. I'm a sucker for gothic font.

I really like the cover and the teaser is wonderful. I don't usually read much YA though I have been recently.

I've never heard of this series. But it sounds fantastic. I'll be sure to check it out. Probably one of my favorites is Sarra Cannon. Her Peachville Demons series is fabu. =)

Is that supposed to be "feat" of death or "fear" of death.

I love your teaser. It's very true.

DWei: Well, that's . . . dense. :P

Rachel: There is something creepy about the cover. That's one of the things I do like about it. :)

Interesting teaser!

Theresa: I like how elaborate it can be; elegant and a little creepy as well.

Summer: I'm glad you liked the teaser!

RaShelle: I'll have to check that out. :)

Michael: It's "fear of death". The character's being sarcastic about not wanting to jump and risk his life.
