Blog Tour: Teen Author Boot Camp (+ Giveaway Of An Online Conference Pass)
Hello, blogosphere! This is somewhat of a different post from what I normally blog about. While I know there's a good chance you, dear reader, are an adult and not a teen, I was contacted by the Teen Author Boot Camp and asked if I'd be willing to do some promotion for them.
Since I'm a young adult myself and thought TABC sounded like a really cool event, I thought I'd jump onboard and spread the word. The TABC was also kind enough to offer to giveaway a pass to their live online broadcast (or $5 off the normally-$10 All-Pass, which gives you access to more than just the live broadcast) whose keynote speaker is Shannon Hale.

When I was in high school I was a president of the dance team, a singer in the choir, a hang-out-with-my-boyfriend-until-mom-and-dad-forced-me-home kind of person. But in my heart, I was a writer. This is why I tell people all the time, “I was always a writer. I just always hated English.”
Because I was a closet writer, I didn’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of, no one to tell me when I stank, no one to teach me how to craft a really great story. My teachers were the millions of books I read (not in a closet—but hidden away when my friends were around). And I WISHED I could have had someone to talk to about my hidden obsession.

The Teen Author Boot Camp, founded by the Utah-based group Writers Cubed and sponsored by Utah Valley University is one of only a few writing conferences nationwide geared solely for teenagers who have a love for the written word. Once
Upon a December Nightmare – Loosely Based on a True Story
Thank you so much for having me on
your blog today, Golden!
You hear all the time about horror
stories being based off a true story, such as The Exorcist and The
Amityville Horror. Thinking the story might be true greatly increases the
fear factor. But I am here today to tell you that Once Upon a December Nightmare in The Nightmare Collection is loosely based off a true story.
On December 28, 2002, three friends
(my best friend, her sister, and her sister’s husband) and I were going to go
to a movie and out to eat. Lord of the
Rings: The Two Towers was sold out, and we couldn’t decide on another movie
to go see, so we ended up at Subway to eat dinner. We chatted for a while, and
none of us wanted to go back home so early, so we piled into my friend’s husband’s
old truck and rode around. We ended up on one of those one-lane mountain trails
in the Jefferson National Forest.
We were having fun, joking around
and the like. Then, we saw the tree blocking our path. No worries. The “James”
of the ground said he knew a spot we could turn around and go the other way.
All good, right?
In the clearing, some hunter, or
hunters, had deposited deer remains. They were very creepy and sent a chill up
my spine. Plus, I wasn’t thrilled about them, since I’m a vegetarian and feel
bad for the poor creatures. We didn’t know why the deer were there, but the
mood in the truck changed as we headed back the way we’d come.
When the headlights flickered out
and plunged us into the dark, I knew our fun night had changed to one of horror.
The cell phones didn’t work and we had no way of starting the truck, so we set
out to walk to the main road.
In situations like this, I have to
admit I become a great talker, even though I’m typically the more shy, quiet
type. I talked about aliens, The X-Files,
serial killers, and monsters. I kept saying we had to stick together and keep
walking. I could’ve walked home that night, even though it was so cold and we
all grew numb.
Eventually, we came out to the main
road and found a house. The people in it wouldn’t let us inside, but they did
let us use the phone to call my dad. We stood around there for a while before I
said we should keep walking. Dad found us, and we climbed into the car with the
heat blasting and went home.
Although our adventure ended much
better, I don’t think I ever would’ve written Once Upon a December Nightmare without having lived the tale ... to
some extent.

Gravity Trilogy Cover Reveal

Edonys refuses his father’s last request to fall in love, but Nike isn’t anyone. She’s bold and different than any Cupidian female. When he shows her his planet’s delights, Nike and Edonys realize they must discover another way to save their loved ones because it will be easier for an Earthling and a Cupidian to ignore the pull of gravity than the pull of love.

Ah, could you tell me who Selena Gomez is? 'Cause I certainly know who Taylor Swift is. Oh, hold on, I'll Google her . . . hmmm. She's one of the Barney kids! *ahem* Okay, okay . . . I guess Selena Gomez. I've never heard her though, so I'm just sort of randomly choosing. (Because I don't like Taylor Swift all that much.)
15. Your pet peeve?
Doing things unevenly. If I do something with my right hand, I get the urge to do it with my left hand. Good thing I'm fairly ambidextrous.
16. What's your favorite font?
Eurostile! Preferably bold.
17. How are you educated? (i.e. homeschooled, public schooled, private schooled)
Homeschooled, and proud of that fact!
18. Do you consider yourself tomboy-ish or feminine?
I'd like to say I'm a tomboy, (although my mom says I'm more feminine) but that's playing to a stereotype. I've had enough dealings with stereotypes.
