My Favorite Martian Bloghop

I wasn't sure what alien to choose for this blogfest at first, but then I realized it wasn't a very hard choice. I'm absolutely going with whatever caused the circumstances of 2001: A Space Odyssey, because it's my favorite portrayal of "aliens": Strange, incomprehensible, confusing, and non-human, as I would be willing to bet real aliens would be. Sure, it's fun when aliens are humanoid and speak our languages and resemble human society (I'm lookin' at you, Star Trek) but it's very unlikely to happen if we did encounter anything from a place other than Earth. At least, that's the way it seems to me.

This week, my teaser is from The Last Theorem by Arthur C. Clarke and Frederik Pohl. 164 pages in, I'm still quite not sure what to make of the book . . . except that, against the odds, I rather like it.

 (Why do they do this? I'm not going to pick up a book just because the size of the author(s') name(s) is larger than the title.)

Although Dr. Joris Vorhulst had never heard of the Grand Galactics or any of their client species--and would have been likely to give a very different answer if he had--he, technically, was still quite right in what he said. No space aliens were going to decide to exterminate the human race. The only space aliens interested in the subject had already made the decision to do so and had then gone on to more entertaining matters.

This week, my teaser is from 2061: Odyssey Three by Arthur C. Clarke, one of the three sequels to 2001: A Space Odyssey. (Yes, I'm reading Clarke again.) I recently finished 2010: Odyssey Two, which is even more interesting seeing as we're in 2010 right now. Unfortunately, we're not going to Jupiter . . .

"It fooled a lot of people in the old West--iron pyrites. Common on the outer satellites, of course, but don't as me what it's doing here . . . "

   "Visual contact lost. You're two hundred meters in."

This week's teaser is from Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. I really don't know why it's taking me so long to read, but it is . . . I keep getting distracted.

The Supervisor did not use those actual words, of course, and the thoughts he really expressed were far more subtle. A human listener would have heard a short burst of rapidly modulated sound, not unlike a high-speed Morse code sender in action.
