My Novel Is The Next Big Thing!

Well, okay, maybe not. But Chris Kelworth (of The Kelworth Files) and David Powers King (of The Cosmic Laire) both tagged me in the Next Big Thing, or Be Inspired, meme-whatsit that's been circulating in the blogosphere and asks people about their current works-in-progress. Thanks for tagging me, guys!

The questions are a little different for each tag but basically ask the same things, so I'm going to mix and match from both. The WIP in question is my upcoming NaNoWriMo novel since I've pretty much decided what I'm going to write about. This will help me flesh out my ideas, at any rate.

On to the tag!

1. What is the title of your book?
I don't know, actually. It's just half an outline and an underlying concept at the moment.

2. Where did the idea for your book come from?
A bit of a long story. You see, I was feeling destitute of good ideas, and in hopes of jogging my creative side I decided to write down ALL of the things I liked in fiction onto slips of paper (separated by category, such as Writing Style, Plot Element, Point of View, etc.) and then randomly combine a few from each. One of those combinations inspired the idea of a ship traveling to a new planet. Then, editing the idea, I thought:

"What if colonists decided to land on a known and as-yet-unexplored continent, but while journeying to their destination were plagued by mysterious disappearances and tragedies onboard an airship? And what if the main character befriended the saboteur behind their problems?"

Yup. That's the stuff that comes out of my brain.

3. In what genre would you classify your book?
Science Fiction/Steampunk. I love reading Steampunk but I've never actually tried writing it myself. I'm not positive about the age group, though I think the protagonist will be from 15-20 years old.

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie?
Other than the obligatory Alan Rickman somewhere, no clue. I'll probably have more of an answer after the book's been written.

5. Give us a one-sentence synopsis of your book.
On the way to a new world, the son of a prominent airship captain becomes tangled in the beginning of war that could lead to the destruction of his family and his career.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
My dream, at the moment, is to have my work represented and traditionally published. I think self-publishing is a great and highly viable alternative, but I think I'd try submitting to agents first. Just to see if anyone liked what I had to offer.

7. How long did it take you to write your book?
Seeing as I haven't written anything yet, I'd estimate this novel to take around two months. I finished last year's NaNoWriMo novel during December.

8. What other books within your genre would you compare it to?
I am hoping for a Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld/Airborn by Kenneth Oppel/Jules Verne-ish feel. I'm sure it will fall far short of such works of fiction, but those are the novels with a Victorian Era setting that come to mind. Though it's not exactly Victorian Era; the world isn't Earth and the society has key differences.

9. Which authors inspired you to write this book?
All Steampunk authors influence me, but other than that, there aren't any specific people.

10. What else about your book might pique the reader's interest?
I'm contemplating adding a few steampunk dragons--and other animals. Hovercraft, cyborgs, and sentient trees are already in there.

The Traveling Smoothie Tag!

Okay, a little slow to do this one, but better late than never, right?

Mercy Vaughn at Not At All Stupid tagged me (thank you, Mercy!) and here are the rules for this Traveling Smoothie Tag:

1. Put an uncolored copy of the smoothie into the post (for video bloggers, print it out or insert it into your video).

2. Color in another copy of the smoothie. Be creative and color the smoothie, straw, and background, if you wish.

3. Insert your colored smoothie in your post/ video/ webpage. If you wish, you may include the location of the smoothie. Be as general or specific as you wish.

4. Name five blogging/ video blogging/ DeviantArt friends who will then have to fill out the smoothie, too. Also remember to link to them, because linking to people makes sad people happy.

This has to be one of the more interesting tags I've done. :)

But I'm going to have to break the rules a bit. While Mercy printed hers out (view her awesome smoothie and description HERE) the printer's out of ink, the scanner doesn't work with the computer that's connected to the Internet, and I don't vlog. Hence, I decided to go digital.

The smoothie for those days when life needs a bit more bright blue drink in a glass decorated with purple and silver flowers, and a slight drop-shadow.

About the drop-shadow: I spent way too much time fooling around with Sumopaint's layers and effects and whatnot. It is one of the best image editors I've found (though Flame Painter is still unrivaled when it comes to playing around with color), with hundreds of options. Have I mentioned it's free, too?

I'm going to deviate a bit and put in some facts that aren't about me. Because it's easier that way.

1. I don't like summer. Fall is more my season, or spring.

2. I'm in the midst of learning how to build websites. With XHTML and CSS and whatnot. It's quite fun.

3. N. R. Williams needs your help! She's trying to get Amazon to allow her to put up her book for free, and the only way to do that is to send them links of the lower price at Smashwords--which you can do (but I can't, unfortunately, because I don't have an account). Find out more HERE.

4. Have you heard of Pottermore, yet? I'm interested; I'm not so sure how it's supposed to work, but will be keeping my eye on it.



5. According to the OECD's Better Life Index (set up to find out in which country you would live the best life possible based on what's a priority to you) I should move to Canada, Australia, or Sweden, in that order. Which countries do you get? And isn't playing around with the flowers and ranking just plain fun?

6. Um . . . thinking . . . I've recently been reading the source code of sites I come across. It's interesting to see who uses Strict XHTML and who uses Transitional, and who doesn't use the doctype declaration at all.

When was the last time you ate chicken meat?


The day before yesterday. I can see the positive side to vegetarianism, but seeing as I'm allergic to milk (I can still eat dairy products like cheese and yogurt) I have to get my protein from somewhere . . . and I like meat. To an extent. Slimy, germy, raw meat is disgusting any way you look at it. (Can you believe my browser is telling me "germy" isn't a word?)

I don't listen to songs. Well, not often, anyway.


What were you thinking as you were doing this?


That it's very dark and gloomy outside. It's raining--again. There hasn't been a full day of sun in a while--again. But while the river's high, it's nothing like what's happening in the South/Midwest.

With regards to my real name, no, not really. People don't call me anything except my full name. But Blogger is a different story--I get called by all sorts of variations on The Golden Eagle. Golden. Eagle. TGE. GE. G'Eagle. Eags.

I've Been Tagged!

It's been a long time since I've done a tag! Yat-Yee Chong at the blog of the same name tagged me with this, so here I go!

1) If you have pets, do you see them as animals, or are they members of the family?

Hendersen is a member of the family! (Even if he didn't truly appreciate being dragged around in a cat carrier while we were moving . . . it was either that or leaving him in the backyard, which we certainly weren't doing.)

2) If you can have a dream come true, what would it be?


To contribute something to the world, in any form, whether it's large or small, and has positive effects.

3) What is the one thing most hated by you?

Stereotypes. Especially since I'm homeschooled--I keep running into the fact homeschoolers are often thought of as being "weird" "dorky", blind when it comes to social situations, etc. 

4) What would you do with a billion dollars?

A billion dollars?! That's a lot of money. But first things first--make sure the people around me are safe and secure, and then donate a percentage to organizations that help people all over the world. Invest what's remaining and use the interest to continue supporting the people mentioned above.

5) What helps to pull you out of a bad mood?

Writing. Playing a musical instrument. Reading a favorite book. Running.

6) Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?

Loving someone. Although it is nice to be loved in return. :) 

7) What is your bedtime routine?

Take care of teeth, take out contacts, put away the stuff I was using earlier. Bathroom, too. (You aren't pulling the chair trick on me! ;D)

8) If you are currently in a relationship, how did you meet your partner?


Ask me that again in a decade.

9) If you could watch a creative person in the act of the creative process, who would it be?


I can vouch for a writer's process--it's probably the closest of most processes to a spectator sport, LOL--but it would be interesting to watch a musician compose something.

10) What kinds of books do you read?

Everything. Well, I have my favorites--all sorts of SF, Fantasy, Realistic/Contemporary Fiction--but if there's a genre I haven't tried I'll chase after it and if it's well-written and a good story then I'm not picky.

11) How would you see yourself in ten years time?

Doing scientific research. And writing a fascinating book about it. Okay, that's just how I'd like to see myself. 

12) What's your fear?

This tag really doesn't hold anything back, does it? I don't have a single biggest fear--at least, I can't think of any at the moment--but I can tell you that despite all my thoughts on writing and etc., the most important things on my plate aren't getting published. If I don't get published . . . *sigh*.


But. I can still write anyway, right?

13) Would you give up all the junk food for the rest of your life for the opportunity to visit space?

As in, actually get the chance to be in a shuttle and go to the International Space Station? ABSOLUTELY. (Besides, I don't eat that much junk food.) 

14) Would you rather be single and rich, or married and poor?



Make that happily married and poor.

15) What's the first thing you do when you wake up?



Shut off the alarm and go to the kitchen to eat breakfast.

16) If you could change one thing about your spouse/partner, what would it be?

I like my name. Both here on Blogger and in life, although few people spell/pronounce it right the first time . . . and with an American accent it's hard to get my Chinese name right.

18) Would you forgive and forget no matter how horrible a thing that special someone has done?



It depends on who the "special someone" is. And what they did. But considering very bad things? No. I might not give them the cold shoulder for the rest of their life (or mine) depending on who it is because I don't like holding a grudge, but I wouldn't be able to let some things slide, and certainly not forget them.


19) If you could only eat one thing for the next six months, what would it be?


Er, soup? It's fluid, and you can put all kinds of things into it . . . so I would think I'd be able to stay a little healthier than if I ate something like chocolate the whole time.

10 things about myself! Um, well, let's see . . .

1. The first actual chapter book that I finished, (not those reader things, like Nate the Great) was Charlotte's Web.
2. I don't like Pride and Prejudice. The book, that is; I've never seen the movie, nor do I intend to. Elizabeth got on my nerves, I'm afraid.
3. I've started stories in the SF, Paranormal, Fantasy, Mystery, Action/Adventure, Dystopia, and Realistic Fiction genres. (I have never, *cough* finished any of them, however.)
4. I tend to run out of steam with these sorts of questions right around this point.
5. I currently have mild writer's block with my story.
6. I love Word. I'd probably write less if Word was not around.

I've never watched Little House On the Prairie, but from the book, I do like Laura.

2. What is your favorite dessert?
Frozen fruit. Blueberries, mango, strawberries, cherries, peaches . . . mmm.

Alaska, for its nature. (I may not like Sarah Palin, but I do like the state itself.) Or Hawaii, although I wouldn't want to move there.

More like color schemes . . . as long as it goes together well, I like it.

6. What is your favorite TV show?
NOVA on PBS. That show rocks, I tell you. Last night they had one on the Chilean miners, going through the days as Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C went into action. I was grinning when they showed the miners coming up from the ground, since really, it was an amazing rescue!

7. What are your favorite condiments?
I don't use salt, pepper, stuff like that. (I'm assuming that's what you mean.) But I do like Newman's Own Sesame Ginger sauce.

Green. Light green. It's not sickly or anything, though.

Yes!

It would depend on the type of relief work that I'd be doing. It would also depend on where I'd be doing the relief work . . .

I've never watched a foreign film. (Is this bad?)

No. I HATE writing! I loathe it! The beings who possess my mind and force me to write are cruel enough that they don't even make me like the awful chore!

5. Will you be doing NaNoWriMo? What's your book about?

I'm not going to be doing NaNoWriMo, although I will try to write as much as I can next month.

As for what my book is about, it's . . . complicated. Not to mention it has CLASSIFIED written all over it, (even to my mom because I don't want to spoil the plot for her :D), but I can say that there are spaceships. And dictatorships.

6. What's your favorite animal?

I love lots of different animals, although I get the feeling you've already guessed I like birds of prey.

7. Have you ever been to a foreign country?

I was adopted from China, so yes, I HAVE been to a foreign country! Unfortunately, I don't remember a thing. I flew over Korea, (stopped in Seoul), Russia, and Canada. Plus Alaska.

Nope.

Now, for the random!


If you visited my blog yesterday, you may have noticed that I didn't appear to have published a post yesterday--when I DID. It was the book review of Krik? Krak! which I accidentally told Blogger to publish on the 17th. Darn. So, if you I slipped up on NaBloWriMo, I didn't!


Only an absolute bookworm would get hyper at the idea of traveling to two libraries in one day and getting out a million books at each, which I will presumably be doing tomorrow. They're both very good libraries, too. Plenty of YA, and MG, and Adult, and even DVDs. Utopia, people.


Which only makes me more frustrated when I learn that the District's representative wants to CUT THE LOCAL LIBRARY'S BOOK BUDGET DOWN TO ZERO. Otherwise known as nil. Zip. Nothing. They may have given the librarians a salary hike, but no new books if this budget thing continues!


They don't do interlibrary loans around here, either. Darn it!

I thought about doing an animal other than a Golden Eagle, but then I thought maybe you'd be interested in why I consider myself to share characteristics with Golden Eagles. So here's my image:

And here are my reasons:


Aquila Chrysaetos is a strong, intelligent, and majestic animal. I've always wanted to soar through the air, and the Golden Eagle is very adept at flying and hunting (they are known to kleptoparasitize--I don't do that, though. :P). Also like the golden eagle, I am relatively solitary; I am strong independently, but I don't mind working as a pair with someone else. The places they live in are varied, and moving around isn't a bother for me. They prefer high-up locations to nest, such as in trees or cliffs; I love a view.

If you had asked me that in, say, 2008 or 2009, I would have jumped at the opportunity to do a part of my life over. But now? Probably not. I've learned too much, done too many things to warrant traveling back and doing it all over again.

Well, it would be nice if employment went up . . . and my mom got a good job. 

3. What's the funniest fact about you?


The funniest? Hmmm . . . I have a weird sense of humor, but I suppose that's not really a funny fact. I'd have to think about this one.


4. Do you ever feel jealousy with your BFF, and why is that?


I did feel jealous with a past BFF . . . but I haven't felt really jealous of anyone recently (Ahem. I am not totally innocent, of course). To answer the second part, I guess I felt blocked out whenever she talked to people I didn't know . . . 

5. What was the first magazine you had and you liked so much?


Ranger Rick. Best kids' nature magazine out there. Or, In Your Big Backyard. (That sounds cheesy, doesn't it? But it was a cool magazine. I still have plenty of backissues.) 

6. If you win a prize to have $100 millions, what will you buy?


That's a lot of money! I'd probably invest half of it, first, or something like that. With the rest, that would depend on the circumstances. Although, I sort of doubt I'd have to worry about much. :P 

7. What was your craziest dream? (dream in your sleep)


I had a dream couple nights ago that I was being chased by a black-coated ghost with a machete who wanted to take over the world or seomthing. He looked like one of the Nazgul from LOTR. I've had crazier, though. 

8. Why did you make a blog?



Because it looked like fun! Also, I had enough time on my hands to do it and I love writing.

Handwriting Tag and Brooke's Tag

The first tag I'm going to be doing (I decided to put two in one post) is the handwriting tag!


Arlee Bird at Tossing it Out tagged me, because I said on Alex J. Cavanaugh's blog "Your handwriting is way easier to read than mine is!"


I didn't think that comment would come back to haunt me, but it did--LOL.


I turned down the first chance of doing this handwriting tag because I didn't have a camera/scanner, and I still don't have a camera or scanner--my phone refuses to talk to the computer via Bluetooth, and I don't have a cable. I wasn't thinking hard enough then.


The solution to this problem? The computer's webcam! I should have thought of that before. The picture quality isn't so great, but you can see the images with enough detail to be able to read my writing (hopefully).

Name three colors you love:


Hmph. I don't have any particular favorites, even three. I usually focus on how colors go together, nowadays, although I used to be an absolute pink-and-purple fan. I have traveled beyond that phase now. :P

Would you ever dye your hair any of those colors?

I didn't list anything, but I'm not dying my hair--unless I go work for a spy agency or something.

If you could choose one skill to be fantastic at, what would it be?

Remembering things. (Does that count as a skill?) It would be nice to be able to pick up details--not everything, like the number of windows on a house you passed, but the important things, like who said what when and why, and remembering quintessential information really well.

Do you like to decorate your room with pictures and other decor?

If I had any other place to put them, no, I probably wouldn't have things on my wall (except for the Solar System poster). But there were already holes in the wall from the previous tenant and I didn't just want to store away my projects.

What was the most shocking moment of your life?

The day my grandma died. That was a crazy day--that evening, when I went to ballet class, (yes, I went to class--I wanted to get away from all the sadness/emptiness/mess in the house) the gas pipe broke. I didn't have my clothes or shoes (my mom had them) and I was stuck in the cold while the fire department sent people up.

Hey, everyone! I decided to do a tag today, taken from Renae Mercado's blog since she tagged everyone who read it. And I'm going to do the same thing here--feel free to do this tag if you want to!


1. If you could have a superpower, what would you have? Why?Flying. Flying, flying, flying. I don't call myself The Golden Eagle for nothing. :)

2. Who is your style icon?
I don't pay much attention to style . . .

3. What is your favorite quote?

4. What is the best compliment you've ever received?
Hmmmm. Someone said that I had a future as an artist--I'm not so sure that I want to be an artist for a living anymore, but I do like drawing--when I get around it it.

5. What playlist/cd is on your ipod/cd player right now?Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It's been there for several years, since I don't use my little iPod shuffle.

6. Are you a night owl or a morning person?
Both. I like staying up late, but I also love getting up early. If I had to choose though, I'd say morning person. I love getting up before the sunrise.

7. Do you prefer dogs or cats?Dogs. Sort of ironic that I live with cats, then.

8. What is the meaning behind your blog name?"The Eagle's Aerial Perspective" is sort of self-explanatory, since my name is The Golden Eagle, but I also chose it because I wanted something that indicated a view of the world that was mine.
