Elevators are one of the most common forms of transportation.

They transport around 10 billion people a week, more than the human population on the Earth.

26 people die in elevators every year on average, safer than cars (40,000 per year) and planes (700 per year).

There are around 58,000 elevators in NYC alone.

Watch the full episode. See more NOVA.

SITE for the show.

So this causes me to ask a question: Do you have Elephobia?

Wow! Interesting facts! I wouldn't say I'm afraid of elevators; I just find them quite boring, unless there's a view!

Theresa Milstein said...

I do now!

Seriously, I nearly always think about elevator safety when I get on an elevator.

Holly Ruggiero said...

I thought elephobia was the fear being trampled by a herd elephants. Either way I think I do not have it.

C. N. Nevets said...

Only when I think about it.

Wow! I didn't know that. Strange how the littlest things make people go, "Wow!"! LOL.

Brooke said...

First of all, Holly, LOL! Frankly, I was thinking the same thing.

Quinn said...

intersting post and facts. Not afraid of elevators though -- most of the time anyway.

Kris Kaumeyer said...

When I get on an elevator, I like face everyone. Most people turn around and face the same direction when they get on. It makes them very uncomfortable to go against the norm.

i watched that show on PBS last night! It was so freaky! And yes, I am afraid of elevators. have been since I was a kid.

Rachel Morgan said...

If it wobbles suddenly then I get scared. Otherwise I don't even think about it!

Great Facts! And No, I don't have it... I can't believe people actually die on Elevators how DEPRESSING IS THAT....

Jennifer Hillier said...

I'm okay with elevators until they make a horrible sound... and then I silently freak out. I do sort of have this fear of plummeting to the ground, but I really try not to think about it.

Great post.

Clarissa Draper said...

I'm fine on an elevator if I'm alone. I WILL NOT get on one that's even close to full. I'm too claustrophobic for that.

C. N. Nevets said...

I'm with Clarissa on the claustrophobia. Normally two or three people is pushing too many for me.

Oh, and if someone turns and faces us in the elevator I don't care that it breaks the norms. I just hate being stared at by some goof. ;)

Robyn Campbell said...

Love that post. :) If I'm on an elevator and get to thinking about it, I get really scared. I close my eyes and want off FAST! :)

Oh no - it says the video can't play cos I'm in the UK!! Boooooo!! Oh but I read the blurb to this programme. Trapped for 41 hours?!?!?!? No thank you!!

I try to use the stairs always cos I need lots of exercise!! But sometimes using lifts is inevitable!! Oh dear!! LOL!!

It must be awful for those suffering with this phobia!! Hugs!! Take care

nope I live on the 5th floor and hop on the teeny elevator every day.
On another note u might be interested to know that monaco is filled with elevators and most of them are on the street

Francine said...

Unless it's more than ten floors up (where I need to be) I'll take the stairs. They're fab for keeping slim and fit!

Mary said...

No fear of the elevator itself, only of the people on it with me. And then only the scents of them. A severe reaction to perfumes and colognes is life threatening for me.

I don't think about elevators at all and rarely use them. I don't work in an office building and our little condo is a ranch. The grocery store is, well, boring, unless your into browsing down the produce aisle. Anyway, the only time I think about elevators is when some Hollywood hunk is escaping out the trap door and barely survives. I'm scared of heights. There you have it.

I wasn't until "The Omen" came out. Real scary scene to me :( And I hated designing around them. There is a lot to an elevator people don't know or see. :)

I have been afraid of elevators for quite some time now. There is no particular reason behind it .I just keep feeling that somehow whatever is holding it will break.

Talli: They can be rather dull, with all that metal and nothing to look at.

Theresa: I always think about getting crushed between the doors, even though I know a lot have sensors and so forth.

Holly: Well, that's good!

Nevets: You can make yourself afraid of a lot of stuff if you think about it enough . . .

Swirly Girl: We take a lot for granted! It is surprising how many things are so integrated we hardly think about them.

Brooke: :D It does sound like Elephant, doesn't it?

Quinn: Me neither.

Kris: I like walking back and forth in the elevator, provided there's no one with me. It's an interesting feeling. :D

Shaynie: Awesome that you watch NOVA! It's my favorite program ever.

I hope you don't have to go on one soon!

Rachel: That is disorienting . . .

Brena: Yeah, it is a bit depressing.

Jennifer: Elevators can make strange noises; clanks, thuds, whirring sounds.

Clarissa: I don't mind it if there are a lot of other people--sometimes it's interesting to see how they react.

Nevets: Unfortunately, there are a lot of goofs. :P

Robyn: I do that, too. If I think about it hard enough, like the cables, the metal, how many feet it is to the ground . . . LOL.

Old Kitty: Darn! It says that whenever I try to watch BBC videos online--what happened to cross-country viewing?!

I wouldn't want to be in an elevator for 41 hours, either.

I like stairs better as well. :)

Joanna: Really? I guess you're used to them, then. Thanks for telling me about Monaco, too!

Francine: Definitely!

Mary: Oh dear. So many people wear perfume/cologne! :(

Nancy: Got to be worried for that Hollywood hunk! ;)

Jules: I've never seen The Omen--I guess I shouldn't if I ever move to a place where there are elevators!

Misha1989: I can seem myself worrying about that now, after having seen those cables on the show. :P
